Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras

Synopsis:
Kaleidoscope HeartsHe was my older brother’s best friend.

He was never supposed to be mine.

I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.

One of us did.

One of us left.

Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.

He broke my heart last time.

This time he’ll obliterate it.

My Review:
3 stars — Well, I was unfortunately underwhelmed.  I think that’s what happens when a book gets so hyped up sometimes, you know?  I heard amazing things about this book from so many places, but it really didn’t capture my attention that well.

The characters were ok…nothing horrible, but I just wasn’t as enamored with them as I had been expecting.  Oliver was kind of adorable with how he pursued Estelle.  And I liked Estelle’s passion for art and helping children.  But it was more them together that didn’t work for me.  I kind of found their back and forth to be a little exhausting.  While I enjoyed some of their chemistry together (like the photo shoot, holy smokes!), I just didn’t feel as much fire as I wanted.  Yeah, it all comes down to the same feeling for me — it felt like it was dragged out and I could have stood to have a shorter book…or something more happen.

I did find it interesting how flawed the characters were — it was realistic.  Even Estelle’s relationship with Wyatt seemed to be really dysfunctional, but it was sort of brushed aside…like it was ok somehow.  I don’t know, it rubbed me the wrong way.  Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this kind of book and these kinds of characters.

  1. I’ve realized that my tastes usually doesn’t fit the current climate lately. In fact, I often wonder if my unconscious mind rebels automatically. I need the beginning, the middle, and the end in a book, but I also need to like, love, and want to root for the characters.

    Happy Reading!
